Recently, when I visited my family in Israel I found out about my grandmothers past. She was never one to talk about it, so I had to hear it from my mother's uncle. She was jailed in the Auschwitz concentration camp for 2 1/2 years with her entire family. She had the numbers tattooed. Unfortunately, her entire immediate family, except one brother were murdered in the camp. One of her cousins was saved by Schindler himself. On the bright side of the story, it is where my Grandmother met my grandfather.
My grandfather was a Polish Jew. He was a firefight in Poland and in 1935 he saved two children from a burning building. They gave him the medal of honor, but when the government found out he was Jewish, they stripped the medal and his honor away from him. When the Nazi's invaded Poland, they were going to kill him. But his knowledge in automobiles was so extensive, that such a mind was rare. They kept him alive, only to help with their cars.
That is my family and the Holocaust in a nutshell.
